Quality-of-life care must start right away

Theresa Brown's thoughtful essay on end-of-life care reminded me of a recent clinical encounter. It was a hot July afternoon when I found myself in a quiet hospital lounge, having "the family discussion" with a patient newly admitted to my medical service, a sweet middle-aged woman whose lung cancer had spread so extensively that it now encircled the vital vessels of her chest.

Volunteers needed to help hospice program

HIBBING — Fairview North Star Hospice is looking for more volunteers to serve a growing number of patients. Volunteers are needed that are willing to assist patients and their families by providing support services such as companionship, fixing a light meal or running errands.

It appears that National Association for Home Care will be back to sponsor at some level the 2011Champions Tour First Tee Open at Pebble Beach. A First Tee Open possibly not held over Labor Day weekend, but during the week of July 4th.

Over the phone, Maureen Slater sounds like a soccer mom. She uses words like “jammies” instead of pajamas and laughs at her own jokes (“I’m smarter than my husband, ha-ha-ha”), some of which aren’t really jokes (“but seriously, he’d tell you the same thing”).
